FAQs
What should I wear for my headshot session?
The most important thing is that your clothing is fitted and in good, unwrinkled condition. Covered shoulders is best and I suggest bringing a fitted jacket or layer to put on top for some pictures. Feel free to bring several shirts so we can decide together which one would work best.
Do you provide a makeup artist?
I highly recommend you- male or female- retain the services of a professional hair and makeup artist. Studio lighting can add shine and wash out the face, and a professional knows how to combat this effect.
I am happy to put you in touch with competent hair and makeup artists in the Pittsburgh area.
How will you retouch my headshot?
The goal is for your photo to look natural and unenhanced, so retouching is done with a light hand. I will remove facial shine and stray hairs, along with gently whitening your teeth and eyes. The photo should not look retouched when we have finished, unless you compare them side by side. We will have a mirror on hand so that we can fix any makeup, hair, and clothing issues before your session!
Horizontal vs Vertical?
Actor headshots are generally photographed vertically, but business headshots can be photographed either way. By default I will photograph in horizontal format, for the following reasons; though upon request I am happy to switch to vertical.
- If the photograph will be used on website or marketing materials, horizontal is preferred by design companies due to its flexibility.
- Horizontal photographs have more cropping options, easily allowing for a square or vertical 8×10 crop without losing detail. This is not the case for vertically photographed images.
- The eye naturally sees horizontally, so a photograph in that dimension can feel more natural and less claustrophobic.
Together we will decide which orientation makes more sense for you.
What is the difference between a headshot and a branding portrait?
A headshot is a concise portrayal of your face and shoulders only, clear and well lit. Professional headshots are for display on your website, resume, or marketing materials- to put a face to your work and brand.
Branding photography is designed to create a folio of images that represent your brand. It tells the story of your business and communicates more about who you are personally to your clients. Creating branding portraits is more involved than just a headshot, and it can include close-ups, upper body, or environmental portraits.
Essentially your headshots clearly show who you are, but your professional and branding portraits show what you do.
How far will you travel?
I am happy to travel! Please note that any sessions beyond a 30 mile radius of my studio will incur an additional $0.75/mile travel fee.
How are you mitigating the spread of COVID-19 in the studio?
Please refer to the studio’s COVID-19 statement here.
